How do you attract international talent to Sweden?

What do international employees appreciate about Sweden’s climate, work culture and society?

More than you might think. Sweden scores very well in surveys of international employees. Not everyone loves the long winters, but far more people than you would expect are very positive about Sweden and choose to move here.

What do international talents think about moving to Sweden?

They enjoy life in Sweden, and the country has a good reputation around the world. The conversation about Sweden can be critical in LinkedIn threads and Facebook groups, but the talents who come here to work are satisfied.

Good career opportunities in a range of industries, such as pharmaceuticals, tech, construction and the many fast-growing startups and scale-ups, are on their radar.

Relative to its population, Sweden has the fourth-largest share of unicorns per capita in the world outside Silicon Valley. Some people call Stockholm Valhalla, the unicorn factory.

Sweden offers very good conditions for families, with schools and preschools that are almost free of charge, and it is possible for both partners in a couple to work full time.

Flat organisations in Sweden give young employees the chance to take part in meetings and contribute to projects they could only dream of in other countries. It is a fast track for career progression.

Many people appreciate the four distinct seasons, not least because summers are not too hot. The “coolcation” is becoming a real trend. Living close to nature is also highly valued by international talents who are already in Sweden.

Many also mention that they value the balance between work and free time.

If you are not from Europe, do you need a visa to work in Sweden?

The short answer is yes!

Applying for a permit requires the employer’s involvement.

People without an EU passport need a permit to work. The basic rule is that the employer sponsors a work permit and that the application is made from the candidate’s home country. There are exceptions to every migration rule, so it is wise to contact migration experts.

The permit can usually be extended, and after four years an application for permanent residence can be made.

Some people thrive in Sweden and want to take the next step and apply for Swedish citizenship. Citizenship opens the door to security-cleared roles and also makes business travel much easier.

There are salary thresholds, an offer of employment or an employment contract is required for extensions, and the terms must be equal to or better than the level in the Swedish collective agreement for the occupation.

Many things must be validated and presented to the authorities, including identity, a statement from the relevant trade union and other information depending on the individual’s background and the company’s history in Sweden.

Processing times are reasonable by international standards. A standard work permit process takes between two and four months, including the residence permit card that is required for entry in some cases.

What are the most common obstacles newcomers face when they first move to Sweden?

Housing, housing, housing. Limited supply, rent regulation and many scams mean you need a solid understanding of the law and of how people get tricked on digital platforms.

New rules for corporate housing came into force on 1 July 2026, which can improve the market for people moving to Sweden. To get access to these homes, the company must sign the lease.

Relocation companies often help new employees find a home so that they can move straight in when they arrive instead of getting stuck in expensive hotels. Relocation consultants check or draw up legally sound contracts, make sure the necessary permissions are in place and prepare a move-in report so that moving out goes smoothly later.

Getting fully set up in Swedish society on the administrative side takes time. Each registration has to happen in the right order, and getting a fully functioning bank account can take not just weeks but months, which is hard on both the individual and payroll.

Relocation consultants take care of these practical challenges so that the new employee can focus on the job.

Is it difficult to move to Sweden and start working?

As in any other country, there are pros and cons for people moving to Sweden.

Sweden is easy to find your way around. Public authorities are highly digitalised, but it takes some patience to understand the whole process.

It is also fairly quick to reach the various authorities by phone for information. The Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) is the best, but remember that verbal information from the authorities is not binding. Accessibility and customer service at banks and insurance companies is another story. It takes many hours, and branches require you to book an appointment.

International and Swedish colleagues meet in English, but we Swedes do not have a strong third language. English is therefore essential at first, but over time Swedish becomes more and more important, both for feeling at home and because knowledge of Swedish is required for anyone who wants to apply for Swedish citizenship.
Speaking Swedish makes both life and work more enjoyable. Many companies support their international colleagues by speaking Swedish with them so they can practise, and they often offer language lessons.

Public transport, such as buses, trains and the metro, makes it easy to get around in towns and cities. Punctuality is high, and both adults and children use it.

International schools are available in many larger cities, and applying early is important to secure a place. Families who move between countries are careful to keep their children’s schooling consistent, which means sticking to a curriculum that also works for the next step if they move home or on to another country.
Sweden is a well-structured society and a very good place for young professionals and families.

What do employers need to know before relocating new employees to Sweden?

The employer is fully responsible for meeting all of the authorities’ requirements, not only when the application is submitted but over time.

The Swedish Migration Agency is increasing its checks on employers, and mistakes can mean that the company is no longer allowed to recruit internationally. The representatives who help with work permits will also be reviewed (as happened when there was a fast-track process) and marked down for mistakes. A representative with a poor track record, or one that has previously lost its certification, increases the risk of a rejection.

The conditions for employing international staff are clear but change very often. Each case officer at the Migration Agency makes their own interpretation, so a representative’s experience from handling many applications is an advantage. Mistakes can lead to deportation, revoked permits and future restrictions.

It takes about two to four months to get a work permit approved. People from visa-exempt countries can arrive sooner.

Keep in mind that employees with children adapt their start date to the school year. This means that many arrive during the summer or just after Christmas, when many colleagues at the company are on holiday.

What surprises international talents most after moving to Sweden?

The very light summer nights, and how varied the climate and nature are in Sweden. One of Europe’s longest countries impresses with its many vegetation zones.

That every season has its own traditions: sailing, skiing, candlelight, beautiful lights, festivals and markets.

Swedes behave differently depending on the season and are much more outgoing in the summer.

How much easier it is to get tickets to see global stars. The media talked about the Beyoncé and Taylor Swift effect, when people flew to Stockholm from all over the world because tickets were cheap.

Which trends and changes in migration and relocation to Sweden are worth knowing about today?

During the 2022–2026 term of office, the government focused on attracting highly qualified talent to Sweden to make Swedish companies more competitive. These occupational groups have received decisions faster than before. (Well, in 2011 it took six minutes. That is what we call a quick turnaround.)

It is important to understand the political landscape and know what may be coming in the next few years, so that the visa strategy holds all the way to permanent residence.

The changes have been many, frequent and often retroactive, which has demanded a lot from employers, representatives and applicants. You therefore need to be able to adapt and to understand that information from the Migration Agency’s customer service is not binding. Misunderstandings can lead to deportation.

The government has also listened to representatives and companies who have explained how the housing shortage affects their ability to recruit critical skills to Sweden.

The structural housing shortage is a major challenge in most of Sweden. It holds back growth, and slowly but surely, outlets and exceptions are being created. It is of course not enough, but it is moving in the right direction. In May 2026, the Swedish Parliament adopted changes to the law that open up more options for corporate housing, and they came into force on 1 July 2026. The company must sign the lease.
